Choose a Minnesota Public Record

Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) provides public access to many state district-court records and documents and supports person-name case searches. The Minnesota Judicial Branch also states that MCRO cannot be used for background checks and directs background-check users to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension public criminal-history system.

A clean Minnesota search sequence

    Case lookup and background check are not interchangeable.

    Search the right system

    Use MCRO for cases; BCA for criminal-history screening.

    For the BCA public search, enter the complete first name, last name and date of birth. Public conviction information is available for 15 years after sentence completion; the public product excludes arrest history. A no-record result can also reflect nonpublic data, name entry or missing agency reporting.

    For a full public-and-private history, follow the BCA FAQ’s data-request instructions. Private access is restricted to the record subject, criminal-justice use, legally mandated checks, or a requester holding the adult subject’s notarized informed consent; it is not supplied by an unrestricted public-name search.

    Open the case details

    Review the Register of Actions and available public documents.

    Contact local court administration when certification is required.

  • A person-name court search can return same-name cases.
  • Online document availability has limits.
  • A court search does not become a BCA background check just because it is public.
